Stacye (stacye) | Friday, October 04, 2002 - 12:03 pm I had tried unsuccessfully to get pregnant for a few years when it was revealed that I had Klebsiella Pneumonia in the reproductive tract. According to the medical literature this bacteria can cause infertility and miscarriage, however, my OB/GYN did not want to accept the fact that this bacteria could be the reason that I was not getting pregnant. She only knew of a few bacteria that could cause infertility, and since Klebsiella was not one of them, she did not take the problem seriously. However, she did prescribe an antibiotic. Once it was evident that the Klebsiella was resistant to most common antibiotics, my OB/GYN did not want to continue trying to clear it up, since she did not think it was causing the infertility. Over the next 16 months, I met with many doctors to get this problem resolved. Unfortunately, all of the doctors had the same view as my original OB/GYN that this bacteria could not be the cause of my infertility, since it is not one of the bacteria that is commonly known to cause infertility. When I met Dr. Toth, I felt like I had finally found someone that could solve my problem. Dr. Toth ran tests on my husband and I, and he found the Klebsiella bacteria. He treated me with intravenous antibiotics and my husband with oral antibiotics. The antibiotic treatment cleared up the Klebsiella bacteria, and shortly thereafter, I became pregnant with twins. During my fifth month of pregnancy, I had Dr. Toth run additional tests to make sure that I did not have any bacteria present that could cause a premature birth. I also had my OB run the same tests. Dr. Toth's tests revealed a bacteria that is known to cause premature births, however, my OB's tests did not reveal any bacteria that could be a problem. My OB's lab had classified all of the bacteria present as normal flora. I showed the results of Dr. Toth's tests to my OB, and he agreed to treat me with an antibiotic. My twin daughters were born at 38 weeks without any complications. My daughters are 1.5 years old, and they have never been sick. I attribute my ability to carry my twins to term and their excellent health to the fact that Dr. Toth had identified the bacteria that could have put the pregnancy in jeopardy. We are so grateful to Dr. Toth, and I do not know where we would be today in regards to having a family if I had never met Dr. Toth. It is unfortunate that more doctors do not understand the significant role that bacteria can play in infertility, miscarriage and premature births. The medical literature is full of cases where women could not get pregnant or could not maintain a pregnancy due to various uncommon bacteria. However, most doctors only know of a few common bacteria that can cause problems with pregnancy, as a result, many times they will not treat the other uncommon bacteria that can also cause problems. It is truly unfortunate that many women will continue to suffer with infertility and pregnancy problems, because their doctors underestimate the problems that bacteria can cause. I strongly recommend Dr. Toth to anyone who is dealing with infertility or problems with maintaining a pregnancy. |
