mira (mira) | Thursday, August 15, 2002 - 12:32 pm Here is an email I recently sent to Dr. Toth: Hi Dr. Toth, We met several years ago when my husband and I were trying to conceive a baby. I had tubal blockages and had been told by my RE that I needed IVF. My husband and I took oral antibiotics at your direction but we were uncomfortable with the IV antibiotic treatment, so we chose not to proceed with it. You told us at the time that even if we did conceive we could have problems and/or miscarriage if we had bacterial issues remaining. We did indeed conceive through IVF and became pregnant with twins. I had a terrible pregnancy - chronic placental abruption with heavy bleeding and anemia (hematocrit of 24), and we lost the twins at 19 weeks gestation. Your words haunted us and so we did the IV antibiotics in July 1999. It was a horrible experience, to be honest with you. We then did IVF again in December 1999 and became pregnant again. I had an uneventful, wonderful pregnancy and gave birth to my full term, healthy daughter at 41 weeks gestation. My OB/GYN advised me to use birth control after the birth of my daughter, but the idea of it seemed so silly - we had spent 3.5 years trying to have her and never conceived except with IVF. You told me I had "old tubes" and other REs said my tubes were blocked. When our daughter was nine months old, I discovered I was pregnant and it was the shock of our lives. We now have two children, 17.5 months apart. We don't know for certain what caused our turn-around with fertility, but I can say that after the IV antibiotics I never have had a UTI (I had them so frequently for years) and I have never had an incidence of gardnerella (which I had on and off for 10 years prior). We look at our miracle babies and sometimes your name comes up - we say, "Could it really have been those IV antibiotics?" Just thought you'd like to hear our story - |
Dr. Toth (drtoth) | Friday, August 16, 2002 - 12:27 am Dear Mira Thank you for your note and update on your fertility history. The nice thing about my therapy is that it is a one time deal. Once the abnormal bacteria eliminated the reproductive track recovers and will function miraculously until your last fertilizable egg is ovulated out. Congratulations!!!! In my office 18 was the highest number of so-called disastrous pregnancies that preceded my IV antibiotic therapy. You are an additional case that follows the same pattern. Trust me, that was the antibiotic you received, that did it. I really appreciate your posting on my site. I wish you and your family all the happiness there is. Enjoy them while they are small. Time will fly by so fast! Before you know it, they will be off. Remember, don't make albums. They are boring. Make scrap books from all memorabilia, birthday cards, pictures, movie tickets, news clipping and so on. This type of collection represents history and will date the photos. Also, when you are in the pediatricians office with your children and they are the only ones without chronic infections, please, think of the IV antibiotics. : ) Warmest regards, Attila Toth, MD. |
